Swamp City travelled to Auckland to take on Pirate City Rollers All Scars. Swamp were anticipating a tough game against a well drilled and experienced side, and Pirates definitely delivered. Swamp Head Coach Justass was satisfied with the number of performance goals Swamp achieved in this game and is extremely proud of the improvements in the 'new look' Swamp teams performance over the course of this season. Big congrats to Vibe, who only graduated fresh meat several months ago for gaining MVP Jammer in the game. Thanks to Pirates for being gracious opponents and for delivering a well hosted event.

Game re-caps from Swamp:
BCR versus SCRR
This was our first outing as a team this year, missing many our veterens, and welcoming many new faces to our squad, this was a chance to see what the new Swamp looks like. The first half saw us down at half time and our skaters were dropping like flies with illness and cramping! BCR were setting solid defence with some big hits taking the wind out of our jammers. However, after a chance to re-gather ourselves and settle on offensive strategies at half time, and we came out with level heads, and determined to do the basics right in the second half, taking the win in the last 7 minutes.
SCRR v DD
Swamp were anticipating an extremely tough game, and Dunedin delivered! Dunedins speedy, agile jammers had our girls scrambling to form defence, while our jammers struggled to get through Dundedins strong, quick to reform walls. I’m proud of our girls for battling this game through to the end. Back to back games is never an easy task, especially when both games are as challenging as these were. Our girls showed great strength and determination to see this incredibly hard game through, giving 100% to the end. A massive ‘hats off’ to our 4 All Star newbies, Hollah, D Rail, Blitz Blaster, and Marco, who ended up playing high rotation in this game.

Re-cap by GEEX QUAD
RCRD's win against WRDL was less than a week after Richter returned from placing 6th at Royal Rumble in Queensland.
Richter dominated the first half with a combination of solid defensive, well-timed offense and quick jammer footwork. WRDL made a strong comeback in the second half, when both teams put up intensely physical play and key players fell into penalty trouble and foul-outs.
WRDL's McFeerce and Snee were MVP jammer and blocker. It was Richter MVP jammer Anna Pave U'Ova's last game for Wellington and league founding member Suffer Jet got her first blocker MVP for the All Stars. Newer All Stars jammers Vicious Vegie and J'Knee Dodgem were on high rotation following the departure of MacKenzie overseas and Skanda Lass injured in Aus.

Game re-cap from WRDL:
(written by Roni Diamond, WRDL)
This bout was a double whammy of goodness. The Whakatane Roller Derby League have recently become a WFTDA Apprentice League (https://wftda.com/) and this was their first WFTDA Mock-sanctioned bout.
After a really close battle in 2015, both these teams were looking to take the win in the first game of the NZ Top Ten Tournament in Whakatane.
This time around, however, ARDL walked away with a very convincing win.
Despite WRDL's huge blocker presence, ARDL's jammers managed to take advantage of any small gap in the opposition wall to gain points. ARDL's pack, which included recent transfer Terror Satana built strong defensive walls rendering WRDL's jammers stationary at times. Both WRDL and ARDL had some standout jammer action with skaters from both teams showing amazing agility and great apex jumps (landed both forwards and backwards!).
The turnout was fantastic, with a big crowd of home town supporters cheering on their home team as well as a large presence of Roller Derby Leagues from around the upper North Island.
WRDL would like to extend a huge Thank You to Auckland Roller Derby, all the Officals (Refs & NSO’s), MC’s, Photographer’s, Paramedic’s, friends & family for helping to make this such a successful event.
Game re-cap from ARDL:
(Written by Brittany Baker)
After last years loss of only 30 points, ARDL were committed and determined to bring the game to WRDL this year. With a year of hard work and intense training to prepare for the 2016 season, we were able to control the game for the duration of the bout. From capitalising on the first Power Jam of the game, ARDL were focussed on starting the game as strongly as we intended to finish. Overall, it was a hard fought game by both teams with a history of being close in score when playing.
